Abraham Lincoln High School
Civic Engagement for Everyone
Legacy Builders Award, First Place: $20,000
Abraham Lincoln High School dedicated its community service grant to fostering lifelong civic engagement within its community, focusing both on students and long-term community members. The initiative goes beyond registering and inspiring voters and takes the next step to ensure safe and accessible elections by recruiting and training poll workers. Through their work, ALHS was on track to register over 70% of eligible students, along with many staff and family members. They have also partnered with local schools to share valuable information with families and have recruited over 50 students to work at polling places.
Through a collaboration with the Election Commissioners' office, the team brought a voting machine to their school, helping to demystify the voting process. By focusing on high registration rates, providing accessible information, and ensuring polling places are well-staffed, the project hopes to see higher voter turnout and a more representative government. The initiative is also ensuring a legacy of civic participation by encouraging alumni to return and work at the polls, guaranteeing that the community will always have dedicated poll workers for future elections.
