Gun Violence and Mental Health:
A Pathway to Healing
Safer, Cleaner, Greener Award, Second Place: $10,000
The "Gun Violence and Mental Health: A Pathway to Healing" project was inspired by a club member's personal loss. With a mission to support families affected by gun violence, the club forged partnerships with the Mayor's office, the Philadelphia Police Department, and the AMIR Healing Center. Ultimately, students created and distributed over 100 care packages to survivors. These packages contained items designed to encourage self-care, help families memorialize loved ones, and empower them to tell their stories.
Beyond the physical packages, the project created a space for open conversations about grief and empathy within the school community. Students gained a stronger understanding of the power of showing up for others, even in small ways and has resulted in a more compassionate and responsive community.
