Riverfront North Clean Up
Safer, Cleaner, Greener Award, Third Place: $5,000

The National Honor Society partnered with Riverfront North, a long-standing initiative focused on connecting the community to the Delaware River through conservation, to create the "Riverfront North Clean Up" project. The students decided to utilize their service grant to replace equipment after Riverfront North's tools were stolen and damaged in an act of vandalism. Beyond replacing these tools, the students set out to conduct re-greening and trash removal at the Frankford Boat Launch site.

The students were able to purchase 18 new items, including shears and trash grabbers, that other community volunteers will also use. Their re-greening and cleanup efforts are ongoing and have already yielded significant results. Students removed over 30 bags of trash and a substantial amount of invasive species like mugwort and Japanese hops. To restore the native ecosystem, they have planted more than 200 native Willow and Dogwood cuttings with plans to plant 20 more trees and shrubs. The students have also reached out to a Riverfront North board member who works at Dietz & Watson to find a solution for the factory's plastic waste that often pollutes the area. Students have committed to continuing the work for years to come and are exploring the possibility of a future summer internship with Riverfront North.
