“Calvary Christian On A Mission”
Legacy Builders Award | Third Place: $5,000
Calvary Christian Academy partnered with Life Turning Point of Philadelphia, a local shelter supporting women and children transitioning out of homelessness. Driven by research linking clean, well-maintained urban green spaces to improved mental, physical, and social health, the students pivoted from their original holiday plans to address a critical infrastructure gap at the facility. Before this initiative, the shelter’s groundskeeper, Mr. Gibbs, relied on borrowed machinery, which severely hindered consistent yard upkeep and compromised the safety of the outdoor play areas. Collaborating directly with the shelter's director and groundskeeper, the student team mapped out a seasonal strategy, dedicated their personal days and off-hours to tackle heavy physical labor, and cleared the property of hazardous debris, fallen leaves, and overgrowth ahead of the winter months.
Through their $1,000 community improvement fund, the team permanently resolved the shelter's resource scarcity by purchasing essential, high-quality maintenance tools, including a cordless leaf blower, a hedge trimmer, a standing weed puller, rakes, shovels, and safety gear. This investment empowers the shelter to manage its own property upkeep independently, ensuring a beautifully serene, dignified, and secure living space for the 10 families housed at the facility at any given time. The project earned a letter of gratitude from the shelter's director for the students' work ethic and compassion.
