Lankenau Environmental Science Magnet High School
Agency and Action – Taking Sept(A) Bac and Our Health
Legacy Builders Award, Second Place: $10,000
Students at Lankenau Environmental Science Magnet High School developed a dual-part public health initiative focused on improving safety in Philadelphia through microbiology and environmental testing. Project Sept-Bac utilized students as "germ detectors" by swabbing seats and poles on SEPTA buses, trolleys, and trains. They then analyzed how factors such as seasonality and humidity affect bacterial growth and categorized their findings to create educational hygiene pamphlets for the public.
The Soil Recovery Project (TSRP) addresses lead contamination in soil, specifically targeting parks and backyards where young children are at the greatest risk. Using a chemical test with sulfuric acid and potassium iodide, the students identify polluted areas by observing color changes in soil solutions. Together, these projects aim to identify environmental hazards and empower the community with data-driven health information, embodying the students' mission to "be the change you want to see".
