The Philly Literacy Mentor Project, Vol. 2
Legacy Builders Award, Third Place: $5,000

The Philly Literacy Mentor Project, Vol. 2, was an expansion of Sankofa's award-winning work from year one with the Philly Service Award. This student-led initiative combats Philadelphia's literacy crisis. The project addresses low reading proficiency rates through its development of Literacy Mentors. These mentors, students in grades 8–12, are trained to design and teach culturally relevant, engaging literacy lessons to early elementary students. The mission of the Philly Literacy Mentor Project was to not only strengthen foundational literacy skills but also to build leadership, confidence, and a sense of purpose in the mentors themselves.

Their efforts expanded the project's reach to over 1,000 students across six schools and youth programs during Read Across America Week. Literacy Mentors led read-alouds and mini-lessons, and even created original short stories and coloring pages that they distributed in over 100 food boxes through a partnership with the Share Food Program. The project strengthened partnerships between schools while instilling a lasting culture of mentorship and service. The curriculum of ten student-written literacy lessons will continue to be used and refined for years to come.
